Il Gato Live Tonight @ BAMM.tv Studios

Il Gato Image

Il Gato is an indie-baroque-folk band from San Francisco, California. Band members include guitarist/harmonica/vocalist Daimian Holiday Scott, pianist/trumpeter/vocalist Matthew Souther, upright bassist/vocalist Andrew Thomas, drummer/vocalist Johnny Major and violinist/trumpeter Annabel Ibanez.

“With a pop sensibility, their sound incorporates folk with a reggae down beat, harmonious rap, lavish modern-classical instrumentation, and emotionally charged vocals with a floating delivery.  Common associations include Modest Mouse, Beirut, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Arcade Fire.” -il gato

Their first independent release, “All these Slippery Things” debuted in July 2010, and was recorded and mixed at Tiny Telephone and mastered by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering ( Broken Social Scene, Death Cab for Cutie, Bon Iver, The Dodos, Cat Power, The Decemberists, Modest Mouse, etc.).

Their musical style is embellished by full horn and string sections, piano, upright bass, drums, banjo, accordion, harmonica and melodica, hence putting the “baroque” in indie-folk. They have performed with numerous bands such as the Castanets, Tom Brosseau, The Felice Brothers, Frank Black of the Pixies (almost), The Ferocious Few, {{{sunset}}}, The Shants, Annie Bacon, Wolf & Crow. Read more about the band band at  http://www.ilgato.com.

Our crew  has been working overtime this weekend to set up one of the most outstanding stage designs of all time. We are very excited to have Il Gato in out studio tonight and to be able to share it with you! Tune in tonight to BAMM.tv/live to check out Il Gato Live at 8pm PST!

JJ Schultz

The JJ Schultz BandTonight’s showcase features singer/songwriter JJ Schultz.

Originally from Wisconsin, he now resides in San Francisco and is the host of the legendary Hotel Utah’s open mic night. He is also recognized as a staple in the San Francisco music scene. JJ’s music can be described in many ways, but to really understand you just have to listen. His music is said to capture what life is like living in rural America, the hardships, the struggle and overcoming the elements.

Our man demonstrates what Americana should sound like… By showing he is capable of [writing from the point of view of the father who is leaving his family behind… or of the man takes his own life after witnessing the death of his girlfriend], Schultz proves he should be ranked among today’s greatest songwriters.”- MazzMuzikaS.

We have worked with JJ in the past, but this will be JJ’s first performance at BAMM.tv so don’t miss out! To get a preview check out JJ’s Discography on Last Stop Records. Tune into BAMM.tv/live this Thursday 1.6.11 at 8pm PST

The Road to SXSW 2011

22 Dec

It isn’t pretty, but here’s BAMM.tv SXSW booking headquarters. I need to clean and hang a picture or two on the wall. No, I’m not working from a correctional facility.

The personal music library has expanded quite a bit since the first SXSW 2011 post. Here’s a quick update on where we are for booking our 3 unofficial showcases.

For a minute there we (Sarah, Jasper in Amsterdam, and I) were trying to create themes for each of the showcases. Then I snapped out of it. Here’s a portion of an email I sent Sarah a week ago:

Sarah,

Sorry to barrage you with emails, but here’s where I’m at right at this moment–fuck themes to the party…Try like hell to book the bands that can draw (middle brother, sharon van etten, vanderslice, etc.), fill in the line-ups with bands we really believe in and love, end of story…Once we have a line-up, then we can figure out how to label it.

Genres be damned. As you can tell, I’m a little slow at times. Bear with me. Also, in no way are the acts I listed booked or even contacted. These were just examples of bigger bands that we like a lot.

I keep saying this, but it’s worth repeating–my god, there are some great bands I’ve never heard of. Some of my recent favorites include Tim Knol (Hoorn, NL), Wallpaper (San Francisco, CA…how have I missed this in my own backyard?), Menomena (Portland, OR), and Lower Dens (Baltimore, MD).

Also, I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m hoping to have a big announcement for SXSW booking after the holidays that may or may not include free nachos in Austin. Nothing is in stone, but we’re working on something pretty exciting that’s close to confirmed.

Parting shot–As I’ve been working on filling three bills, it got me thinking, what would be my ultimate lineup? Then, because I’m a stickler for rules and I can’t leave well enough alone, I thought it might be cool to have some guidelines. At least one of your picks must be a current act not singed or affiliated with the big 4 record labels. Here are mine, but add yours to the comments below. And, again, let me know bands we should be contacting for SXSW 2011!

Ultimate 3 band bill (headliner and two openers):

Otis Redding, with Led Zepellin (don’t over-think this, folks) and Ha Ha Tonka (Bloodshot Records)

Happy Holidays, folks. Go easy on the eggnog.

The Road to SXSW 2011

9 Dec

Well, it’s official. SXSW 2011 is back on the radar. SXSW is leaking out official acts, and I’ve created a spreadsheet for bands. Last year was BAMM.tv’s first go-round on the HGH-bull know simply as “South by” (still can’t commit to using this phrase myself), and we made quite an introduction. Who else drives an RV into the convention center and records bands right there on the trade show floor? (Again, my sincere apologies to the SXSW staff being a pain in the ass and cracking non-sponsor beers in the RV).

BAMM.tv rolls into SXSW '10 trade show like Uncle Eddie in Christmas Vacation, much to the chagrin of SXSW staff.

Things are a bit different this year for BAMM.tv. First of all, we are putting on three (3!) unofficial showcases (3/17-3/19)–one at Beauty Bar and two at Palm Door. I’m still in disbelief that we secured such badass venues, and they are located right in the heart of the action. What does “Unofficial” mean? It means we can book whoever the hell we want and you don’t need a badge to get in. Anyone who’s waited in lines to see a show on 6th St. knows why I’m so excited about this. This year will be different for another reason (aside from ripping off the back RV bumper at a gas station last year): BAMM.tv will be launching our platform service at SXSW! We’ve been producing some incredible music content for the last year, and we’re ready to share it with all of you.

First order or business: booking bands. We are talking with a bunch of incredible bands that I will share just as soon as they are confirmed (won’t be for a month or so), but I want to know who you think we should book? What bands or artists are you excited about? Musicians are like books–it’s impossible to know all the good ones. Help me out, folks. Leave the bands link in the comments field and I will check them out.

I will check in with all of you on a weekly basis here and fill you in on all developments leading up to SXSW.

Regards,

Phil

BAMMsterdam: Popronde, a Dutch talent melting pot.

2 Dec

Every week our colleagues over in Amsterdam report on the current developments in the music scene of Northwest Europe.

That's the way it goes down at Pompronde, the Dutch festival with some serious momentum.

By Jasper van der Put

So you’re a young, talented act. So you’ve got a couple of half-decent songs in the back-catalogue. Where to find an audience? Filling support slots for bigger artists requires is an honorable way to earn your chops…and go broke in the process. Participating in music competitions is another option, but many consider it ‘selling out’ or ‘phoney’, not to mention you probably forfeited your copyright by entering the contest.

Well, in the Netherlands we’ve got the answer.

The Dutch festival Popronde, pronounce as ‘pop-rohndah’, (www.popronde.nl) started back in 1994 as a side event for a local festival in the student city of Nijmegen. From there on, it grew into a traveling festival, visiting as many as twenty-five cities this year. In this way, bands that are only well known in their own city can get to know a new audience in other Dutch cities. Popronde has also gained acclaim as a platform that supports a broad range of artists without comprising their integrity. Last week the festival came to a conclusion at it’s traditional last stop in Eindhoven, ending up in a frantic, drunken live jam between some of this year’s top participants.

So what’s the recipe for this ingenious festival? Every year a special committee hand-picks 100 artists from a total of about 700 applicants stretching every conceivable genre. This selection is then programmed in varying combinations of about thirty acts per city. The programming is based solely on the capacity and taste of the venues and local promoters of Popronde – there’s no influence from big commercial sponsors or major record labels.

It’s a close-knit community of artists, pop promoters, booking agents and national media that have created a platform which has proven itself to be a fertile breeding ground for tomorrow’s leading artists. Whether the artists are singer-songwriters, rock bands or hip-hop outfits; they all took as a touring band at this festival. The involvement in recent years of a large range of national Dutch media only adds to Popronde’s status as a leading institution for talent development in the Netherlands.

Here are some of 2010’s noteworthy Popronde artists:

BAMM.tv (San Francisco) is start-up focusing on live music production and licensing with a fixed presence in Europe. Platform launch is scheduled for March, 2011 at South by Southwest. For more information, please check out BAMM.tv or follow us on Facebook.
